Currency

Travel with U.S. currency. Travelers checks provide good security. Sometimes checks can be inconvenient or time consuming to change. US cash is easy to exchange into the local currency, colones, at hotels, gas stations, stores, taxis, and banks. Do not change money in the streets. Credit cards are accepted in the cities, but in many towns are not commonly accepted (including Golfito). Cash advances on a VISA card may be obtained through banks in Golfito. MasterCard cash advances may be obtained through banks at the Panama/Costa Rican border. Money wires are possible but can be complicated. A Western Union agent is also available at the border. This is approximately 40 miles away (about a one hour taxi or bus ride).
